Walking in the Ausserfern
Walking in the Reutte Area
Anyone considering taking a walking holiday in Austria will definitely not be disappointed by the variety of hiking on offer in the Ausserfern. The local tourist offices all offer different walking tours for those who prefer to take their trips to the mountains as part of a guided group.
For those who prefer to do things under their own steam, the area offers peak with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, as well as single-day and multi-day circuits and hut-to-hut tours.
No-one should miss one of the Ausserfern highlights. The "barefoot walking trail" above Reutte is an experience for young and old. Begin with the journey up the gondola to the Hahnenkamm, visit the alpine flower garden and then take of shoes and socks to set off on the "barefoot trail". A descent to the valley can be made either via the gondola or by following the ski trail downwards.
Longer tours and hut-to-hut itineraries can be arranged with a little forward planning. Of course, there are local guides available who specialise in arranging just this type of tour and those interested may wish to contact Bergführerbüro Jörg Brejcha.
Climbing in the Ausserfern is also a popular sport and local climbing guides are constantly finding new routes in the local crags. Children's climbing is available in Rieden and there are countless routes on the Weissenwand, in Gsperr or on the Gaichtpass. The Reutte Tourist Office offers a guided introductory afternoon for children and beginners.
